Win some Christmas Cheer

Here are the details for the Christmas Cheer competition. There are 2 prizes to win so there are 2 ways to enter, and you can enter in both. All you need to do is leave a comment telling me,
1. The best handmade gift you have ever received- and put goodies as your prize code word to win a Santa sack full of handmade goodness.
Or
2. The story of your nightmare before Christmas craft story. Like that time you had to stay up all Christmas eve to finish all those presents because you promised everyone something handmade. Put stash as your prize code on your entry to win a Santa sack of crafting fun.

The more stories you have the more times you can enter! Just remember to put the prize code on your entry.

Entries close 31 December 2009. The winners will be announced 1 January 2010.

Good luck.

So, the best handmade Christmas gift I ever received and gave was not made by hand as such, but it was made by me, with a little help from the husband.
Second born son, Ethan, arrived at 9.30am on Christmas Day 2002. Not quite as planned, and Christmas dinner hospital style, even private hospital style, doesn't cut it, but a lovely gift just the same.

Best hand made gift was the sewn bento box carrier cloth my friend who "isn't very skilled don't look at the stitches" (yeah right!) made for the bento box another friend was giving me. I loved it because two people collaborated, two people with really different approaches, personalities, skills. I loved it because she chose lovely fabric and because she did it even though she was worried it might not be good enough. And of course I love it because she did a great job and it is a daily inspiration. There's a pic of it here http://www.flickr.com/photos/soozs/4148987283/

Hard to choose a worst crafting nightmare story - there is element of the nightmare in so so many Christmas crafting experiences!

How about finishing knitting a hat in the car on the way to lunch. Boiling hot day, sitting in (non-aircon) car with meal contribution balanced on my knee, massively pregnant, girl child whining in back seat and having to sit in car out front of the destination for ages while I sweatily handle the nice thick fluffy wool, cast off and then wrap before we get inside, late? Still think the hat would have benefited from a couple of extra rows...

It's your standard disorganised crafting experience. I made a quilt for my baby-nephew (yes, he couldn't care less what he got unless it involved crinkly paper). Quilt top made but I had to quilt it. By Hand. Insanity. Then bind it. After having Christmas Eve dinner with friends, I'm stitching down the binding. 4am. Can barely keep my eyes open. I crawled into bed at 6am. Up 2 hours later. I want to die. Never again.

Small mercies. He loves his quilt now that he's 7. Sigh.

The very best handmade gift I ever received was from my sister. She made me a beautiful table set of christmas linens. There is a runner for down the middle of the table, eight placemats, napkins and pot trivets. Just beautiful in dark greens and bugundy with gorgeous heavy bread and tassels. I hope it last a lifetime.

The best handmade gift(s) I ever received were afghans that my grandmother would crochet and knit for me every year. My grandmother would give me a blanket every year, and I adored them all. Some have gotten lost, some were destroyed from years of use.. but I had one blanket that was left, and it was in the bed of my husbands truck (he had a cover on the back, it wasn't exposed to the elements) after we used it for something this spring.

My husband was in a terrible automobile accident on December 19th, and he rolled his truck several times, and lost everything that was in the back seat, and the bed of his truck. The truck was totaled. My husband, miraculously, is fine. The blanket, was nowhere to be found. I was devastated.

After all the snow melted this week, my husband went back to the crash site to look for a few other belongings that went missing, and he found the blanket!!

hmmmm, another best handmade gift i received is from my mom and sister... we spent all christmas eve making ornaments together and then we swapped them... i still have them on my tree too and it was a memorable event... ornaments made with love and laughter, leaving memories and giving us a piece of such memory to put on our tree...

after a few years though, we grew tired of making them so we started buying them... last year we bought handmade ones thru etsy from other vendors... this year we swapped store bought ones which is just as wonderful!!!

hugs!e

i dont have a nightmare HANDMADE incident... BUT i must share a "rough" christmas....

as kids, we weren't well off... we weren't poor but not so well off... my mom loved and still loves nic nacs... i remember one year buying her this lil nic nac of a girl sitting on a log next to this big flower... it was cute, NOT toooo cheap but not THAT expensive either... i musta been 7?! anyhow, i used my allowance and got it for her... my sister is yrs older and got my mom something more extravagant.... i remember my mom opening my gift and LIKING it but me crying cuz i thought it was ugly...

those incidents happened for some years.... and my mom is the EASIEST to buy for!!!!! but i guess it was feeling like wanting to get her the best but only being able to afford an OK gift...

my dad was picky [note: WAS]... one year my sister bought my dad GREEN jeans... he didn't wear jeans to begin with and he wasn't much on color... [NOW he is!!!] his solemness had her in tears and she had to return them... took us awhile to figure out what to get him.... eventually we got him lotsa books that he wanted... didn't cry much after that...

Would you accept worst handmade gift ever for a booby prize?
My MIL gave me an exquisitely detailed, yet frighteningly HIDEOUS needle felted doll this year.
I don't really know what possessed her.
I'm not a doll person.
I'm not a purple person.
The doll is all decked out like an aerobics participant complete with water bottle and white trainers, and the perfectly formed face is almost grotesque.
I feel awful- I know it's handmade, and there is obviously a great deal of time skill involved in it's creation, but really, such skills don't make up for the fact that it's on a different planet from me as far as style and taste go. I really don't know what to do about it. Especially given that MIL is a regular visitor to our house...
#any suggestions welcomed!!
